Chris, I'm glad you have found a pen that works for you when making notes in your Bible. However, when doing inductive Bible study, there is a need for many more colors than the Bic Cristal comes in. This post was written a good while ago and these pens are no longer the ones that I recommend for marking. The Pilot Frixion Erasable Gel Pens are the best. You can read about them here: http://preceptcamden.com/2010/07/23/pens-and-pencils-the-final-word-on-the-perfect-match/
Also, regular ink pens tend to bleed over time and sometimes even eat through the pages. But the most important thing is to read, study, mark, and engage in God's Word. So if you've found something that helps you do that better, I think that's great!

Actually ther is a pen that has zero bleed through. I love to write in my Bible, and have had several journaling Bibles. The best pen i have found for writing in a Bible is a red Bic Cristal. After years of trying everything under the sun (from expensive to cheep), i discovered that this extremely inexpensive pen is amazing.

It may be inexpensive, but Bic makes a very great product. It writes very smoothly, and has a nice flow. It is a ball point, but i've never had it clot up. The thing that i love about the red Bics is that you can caompletely mark over over a passage or word and it is extremely easy to see the black lettering of the Bible through. Plus the red makes it ver easy to see where you have marked because of the contrast between the color of the pen and the Bible print.

When underlineing the words of Christ that are in red, there is enough of a contrast between the Bible print and the pen so that there is no problem whatsoever reading His words.

I use the worlds smallest NKJV (that is the actual name of it) which measures 4 inches by 5 inches by 1 inch, with 4 point font. The letters are TINY, but i can mark all over it with my red Bic and still read the small print with no problems.

Gels pens huh? What is the bleed through ratio on these? I take it you are more making a symbol in the margin then doing heavy underlining and note taking. Interesting blurb I liked it.

Found this looking for a Pilot bible pen I read about on a fountain pen site... anyway, if you are looking for some good, colorful fine-tip pens, you should check out Jetpens.com. They have a lot of ones smaller than .4 - even a .18. My fav is the Slicci .25, though I haven't used that for my bible (I use pencils - but they even have .3 pencils!) so I don't know about bleed through, but I would imagine some of them would be okay at the very least just because of their small points.
