Pens and Pencils: the final word on the perfect match

July 23, 2010

I have written several posts on the perfect pens for marking your Bible. I have expressed my love and affection for a variety of writing instruments. After much research (i.e., personal use) and hundreds of dollars spent (okay, maybe not hundreds but still alot), I have concluded that the above equation is true.

When doing inductive Bible study, the Pilot Frixion Erasable Gel Ink Pens combined with Crayola Twistables make the perfect match. Like peas and carrots. Or like potatoes and gravy. Or like ice cream and hot fudge sauce. Or like peanut butter and jelly. Or like rama lama lama ke ding a de dinga a dong. (Raise your hand if you grew up in the 80′s and know all the words to Grease.)

So you can stop searching, throw away all those other pens and pencils you have, and get these. They are all you need. Trust me on this.

Great for you americans… but these pens and pencils are not available in packs like shown in the pictures above. Here in South Africa we have to buy them loose and can only get the pens in red, blue and black… Why is this so?

    Mike,
Try this link: http://www.jetpens.com/product_info.php/products_id/3689. They are basically the same pens from Pilot but are packaged for sale in Japan. This company ships internationally. They also have the pens I featured in the above review and sell them individually so that you can get exactly the colors you want.
The above pens and pencils are available in Precept Camden’s store. These orders are fulfilled through amazon.com. I am sure that they ship internationally as well.
    Hope that helps!

I “love” Twistables & like the Frixion pens (for some things) but am a bit hesitant about using them for marking my Bible. A few weeks ago I found out the hard way that Frixion ink “disapears” in heat/sun when I used one to write my schedule & to do list in my planner. I had my planner on the dashboard (opened) so I could check things off as I ran errands & after about an hour all my notes “vanished” & I was left with a blank page. When we got back home we were able to make most of it reappear by setting a blue ice pak on it for several minutes but I’d be afraid to do that with my Bible. Have you noticed any fading after leaving your Bible in a hot car for a few hours? And if you haven’t had a problem with any vanishing, would you recomend the 0.5 or 0.7 Frixion pens for the least amount of bleedthrough?
    Thanks.

    Jan,
I have heard about the Frixion ink disappearing in heat, but I have not ever had this happen. I live in SE Georgia where it is very hot (105 heat index yesterday!). Now I must say that I have never left my Bible open in the hot sun so I don’t know if that would happen or not. I have left my Bible (closed) in my car and the ink has been fine.
I must say that I would rather have ink disappear (even though I have NEVER had that happen) than to have it slowly intensify and continue to bleed through pages over time (which I have DEFINITELY had happen). There are some pages in my Bible where I can read what I have written just as well on the back of the page as on the front of the page where I wrote it.
Years ago I had a Precept Ministries Trainer say that she was working on marking her third Bible. She had completely gone through 2 others, having studied and marked them inductively. It made me realize that all of my notes and scribbles need to be inscribed in my heart and my mind. My Bible is a workbook not a work of art.
If for some reason all my ink disappears (which I highly doubt will happen), I’ll just do it all again and, hopefully, retain even more in the process.
By the way, I use the 0.7 pens.
Thanks for your comment and for visiting Precept Camden!

Thanks, that’s good to know. I’ve never heard of the ink slowly bleedingthrough the pages like that but agree some fading would be better. I often take my Bible (& study questions, etc.) to pick up my daughter from school etc. & work on it while I wait in my car. I’ll just make sure I keep my Bible in the shade & not set it up on the dashboard anymore.

One other question, do you use the Frixion pens for margin notes as well, or use fine point pens like Microns, Sliccis or Hi-Tec-C’s? I recently switched to Slicci & Hi-Tec-C pens for margin notes and really like them so far, especially since they also come as multi pens. No bleedthrough so far (but it’s only been a month or two.)

I use the Frixion pens for margin notes also. I’ve tried the Slicci pens as well. They are great with minimal bleedthrough. I just love the erasability of the Frixion pens.

Thanks for the post! I’m gonna have to try Frixion one of these days. In the mean time, I’ll stand by MY fave (ever since I needed to use indelible ink when I worked in a lab–>), Sakura Gelly Roll. Fine point, any color. The inks/pens itself are gorgeous. Don’t go buy ‘em all up now ;) I can only find ‘em at Michaels or other arts/craft stores and they’re always out of stock. :)

Did the Micron’s bleedthrough when marked in your bible? I have those pens but haven’t started marking in my bible with them yet. I won’t if they are the ones you were talking about in an earlier post.

Yes, Traci, Micron pens bleed through to a certain extent. I recommend that you test them somewhere in the back of your Bible – perhaps the concordance. Somewhere that the pages are the same type of paper that you will be marking on in your Bible. The only ones that I have found so far with no bleedthrough are the Pilot Frixion Erasable Gel Pens that are mentioned above. But I am open to hearing from others and what works for them.

Sorry, I meant to ask about additional bleed through over time with the Micron pens. I have tested them out in my bible and discovered the .01 were better than .1 but I just wondered if these were some that would intesify over time so even the smaller diameters would bleed through?
On another note, thank you for the keyword marking sheets – my sister & I both will come to a grinding halt in our study when asked to come up with a new symbol. She told me about your website & that has been a great timesaver.

Not sure about how Microns react over time. Anyone else with any experience with these pens?

Yes, Kim, I have that set from JetPens. I send so many people to Jet Pens that one time they sent my class a bunch of free pens! They are awesome. The reason I like the American packaging is that it is available on Amazon. Buying through the Precept Camden store helps maintain the website.
