Key Word Symbol – “doctrine”

The key word symbol that I use for the word “doctrine” is related to the symbol I use for “faith” which is found on the Key Word Symbol Bookmark from Precept Ministries. For “doctrine,” I use a red gel pen and color it in with a green pencil. For the words “faith,” “believe,” and “truth” I use the same symbol and color it in with a green pencil but outline it with purple pen.

Key Word Symbol – “Passover”

In honor of the fact that Passover begins at sundown tonight, I am sharing the key word symbol that I use to mark this word when doing inductive Bible study. The lines symbolize side and top door posts; the color symbolizes the lamb’s blood that was applied there to keep the angel of death from stopping at the home of anyone without the blood applied and, thus, claiming the life of the firstborn of the household. (You can read about it in Exodus 2:2-12.)

What a beautiful foreshadowing of the perfect Passover Lamb, Jesus Christ, who takes away the sins of the world. (Revelation 5:12)

Key Word Symbol – “peace”

This is my symbol for the word “peace” when I am marking my Bible and doing inductive Bible study. Remember the peace sign from the 70′s? Actually, who needs to remember since it is in vogue again and plastered on everything from purses to jewelry to bumper stickers to you name it. The peace sign that most of us recognize was actually designed back in the 1950′s as a symbol of British nuclear disarmament. A few years later, it came to the U.S. and become synonymous with the anti-war movement.

My symbol for peace is loosely based on the old school peace sign, but the cross is right-side up and isn’t broken. I used a red cross symbolizing Jesus because He is the giver of true peace (John 14:27).

Key Word Symbol – “prophet” and “false prophet”

Here’s how I mark prophet and false prophet when doing inductive Bible study. I use a green pen to draw a little megaphone shape. I color prophet with a yellow pencil and false prophet with a brown pencil.

Don’t forget that the purpose of marking the text is to make you slow down as you read and to help you draw out the main idea of what you are reading. Too often we zip through a passage without really comprehending what it is saying. Get some colored pencils -or, better yet, these awesome pens from JetPens – and slow down as you read God’s Word. As you see repeated words or phrases, mark them in a distinctive way. And you will be on your way to studying the Bible inductively.

Key Word Symbol – “book of the law”

I love the story found in 2 Kings 22 and 23. King Josiah has given instructions for the long-neglected house of the Lord to be repaired and cleaned. In the process of following the king’s orders, Hilkiah the high priest discovers the “book of the law.” The amazing thing is not that the Word of God was found but that the Word of God was actually lost in the house of God. Did you get that? The Word of God was lost and it was found hidden and neglected in the very place where it should have been taught and exalted. I could spend all day drawing parallels to the church today.

However, I encourage you to go to 2 Kings yourself. Read it and mark every reference to the “book of the law” using the above suggested marking symbol or your own symbol. Then make a list of everything you learn about the book of the law. See what God has to say to you through His Word.

Here is a suggested key word symbol for the word “fasting.” It looks sort of like a dinner plate with a line through it. Get it?

Marking key words is a tool of inductive Bible study. Precept Ministries International is known as the “Inductive Bible Study People” and they have a wealth of information at their website.

There is nothing like the inductive study method to get you into the Word of God and learning Truth for yourself. Whenever you dig it out yourself, you remember it so much better. So give it a try.

Key Word Symbol – “calamity”

In Jonah Chapter 1, a key word is “calamity.” The calamity comes in the form of a great storm on the sea that threatens to run the ship aground. This word is found in many other places throughout the Old Testament. Much of the time, the author of the calamity is God Himself. Of course, the calamity is almost always a result of serious disobedience on the part of His people. (We would never do that, would we? Noooo, not us!)

My symbol for this word resembles a tornado and is drawn with a red pen. Mark every occurrence of this word, make a list of what you learn from each occurrence, and then apply it to your life so that you can know how to live when calamity comes into your life!
