There is a danger in sharing the way I mark certain key words when doing Inductive Bible Study. The danger is that you will start thinking there is a right way and a wrong way to mark key words. Nothing could be farther from the truth. When you are marking your Bible or observation worksheet, you should use symbols and colors that make sense to you, that are meaningful to you. There is also the danger of making too much of the tool and losing sight of the purpose of marking – which is to make you slow down and read with purpose, to help you see what the main idea of the text is through seeing repeated words, and to make it easy to compile a simple list of what you learn about each word.
With that being said, I like to share some of the key word symbols I use so that you won’t get hung up on trying to figure out a good way to mark a word and thus miss what you’re reading. Most of the time thinking of a color or symbol to use for a certain word is easy. But sometimes you just get stuck. So feel free to be a copycat. You have my permission!
