What is my spiritual gift?

Have you ever wondered what your spiritual gift  is? Or maybe you didn’t know that you have a spiritual gift. God’s Word teaches that each believer is given at least one charisma (gift of grace, divine gratuity, spiritual gift) by the Holy Spirit at the moment of salvation. Knowing your gift helps you accept your place in the body of Christ and helps you function properly within the body and, therefore, causes the whole body to function properly. Best of all, God is glorified most when we are fulfilling His purpose in our lives.

How can you find out what your spiritual gift is? There are several ways. First, study God’s Word and pray. The primary passages dealing with this subject are Romans 12, 1 Corinthians 12, Ephesians 4, and 1 Peter 4. Precept Ministries has a wonderful study on Spiritual Gifts that goes into these passages in depth. (Order a workbook here.) Second, ask a godly Christian who knows you pretty well what he or she thinks your gift might be.

Another way is to take a spiritual gifts test. Be careful with this and remember 2 things: (1) Any test, no matter how good, is still written by man and is, therefore, fallible and (2) You need to understand the scriptural definition of each gift before you can properly understand how to use your gift.

Here is an online spiritual gifts test that is pretty good. After answering all the questions, your results are sent to your email address. I took it myself, and the results seemed right on target for me. Do your studying first, then take the test. Let me know what you thought of your results. I’d  love to hear.

*You can also listen to this class discussion (Romans Part 4 Lesson 3). It will help guide you through the Scriptures mentioned above.

Read through the Bible in 2015!

Wordle Books & Months

It’s a brand new year and a perfect opportunity to begin a daily Bible reading plan! Here are some plans and Bibles that I suggested last year. It doesn’t matter which one you choose. Just start reading today and keep reading each day. When you miss a day, don’t worry about it. The important thing is to keep going!

Happy New Year!

Summer Bible Study

Beach Chairs with Scripture

Precept Camden’s online and in-person Bible study on Genesis (Chapters 1-11) just ended. We will resume our study in Genesis around the time that school begins in August. After teaching Bible study for over 15 years, I have learned that taking a break during the summer is a good idea, especially since we live in a coastal town. It’s awfully hard to commit to be at Bible study every week when the sun, sand, and waves are calling your name.

However, that doesn’t mean that you have to go the whole summer without studying the Bible! In fact, I highly encourage you NOT to go the whole summer without studying your Bible. There are some wonderful online options that will enable to you participate in a group study throughout the summer. The cool thing is that not only will you still have the benefit of listening to a class discussion which gives you input and insights from other students, but you will also be able to do it at your own pace and in your own time frame.

All of Precept Camden’s past Bible studies remain on the Listen Here page for you to access any time you want. Currently, there are at least 14 different studies from which to choose. The audio files can be downloaded to your laptop or mp3 player so you can listen on the go.

Another wonderful place to find online, self-paced Bible studies for the summer months is Beloved Truth. Beloved Truth is a ministry dedicated to “Exalting the SAVIOR and Equipping the Saints!” There are so many options available through their website – live online Bible studies, self-paced studies, podcasts, and more. So much to choose from! Check out their website There is definitely something for everyone.

You can also find online Bible studies and Bible study training at the Precept Online Community here.

So please enjoy your summer but don’t forget Bible study! While you’re digging your toes in the sand, keep digging into  God’s Word where you’ll find words of life and hope and wisdom for your life.

The Feasts of Israel

Feasts of Israel

This evening at sundown the Jewish festival of Passover ends. This week long holiday celebrates the deliverance of the Jewish people from slavery in Egypt almost 3,000 years ago. The Book of Exodus tells the story of this miraculous event. The chart pictured above gives an excellent overview of all the feasts of Israel. You can also find great information here and here.

Vine’s Expository Dictionary of NT Words Online

One of my favorite word study tools when doing in depth Bible study has always been Vine’s Complete Expository Dictionary written by W.E. Vine and first published in 1940. It was the second Bible study book I bought over 20 years ago, Strong’s Exhaustive Concordance being the first. Those 2 books were great investments; I definitely got my money’s worth out of them.

However, I recently found Vine’s Expository Dictionary of New Testament Words at Instead of thumbing through the pages of a book, you can do a Greek word study with the click of a mouse. The best part? It’s free! Click here to access it.

Read through the Bible in 2014!

Wordle Books & Months

Have you ever purposed to read through the Bible in a year and somewhere around the month of February or the book of Leviticus you just…well…stopped? I have. MANY times. I don’t want to discourage you from reading through the Bible in 2014; I want to encourage you! You can do it. You really can. And if you miss a few days (or even months), don’t stop! Keep going!

I actually began my Bible-reading plan for 2013 somewhere around mid-February. Even though I got behind at times, I kept going. Here it is December 31 and, yes, I have 7 selections to read today in order to finish for the year, but I’ve already read 4 this morning and there’s plenty of time left til midnight. 🙂

Here are some ways you can read through the Bible in 2014:

The Daily Bible – I have used this one before. The readings are arranged chronologically and it’s a great way to get a sense of the timeline of Scripture.

The One Year Bible – I have used this one off and on for several years, and I think it’s my favorite. It has 3 categories of daily readings: one from the Old Testament, one from the New Testament, and one from one of the books of wisdom such as Psalms, Proverbs, or Job.

Read the Bible in a Year – The website helps you create your own reading plan with options including which Bible translation to use and what order to read the books.

Bible App – Of course, don’t forget about the option of taking your reading plan with you everywhere you and your digital devices go! The Bible App has probably the most options available with start/end dates, translations, methods, etc., and is compatible with practically every operating system out there.

Whatever method you choose to read through the Bible in 2014, my best advice is JUST DO IT! And keep doing it! When you falter or fail, just get back to it. December 31, 2014, will be here before you know it and you will be able to look back at everything that you DID read instead of what you didn’t!

Stand Up Pencil Case

Stand Up Pencil Cases

I have decided that I need several of these Kokuyo NeoCritz Transformer Pencil Cases from JetPens. (Also available from Amazon by clicking here.)Not only do they hold your writing instruments, but as their name indicates, they transform into something else – a standing pencil holder! I’d like to have different colors to hold the different kinds of marking tools that I use when doing inductive Bible study. I think I’ll get the orange one to hold my favorite pens, the green one for my favorite colored pencils, and the yellow one for the new markers I got on my trip to Japan this past summer.

Which one(s) do you think you need?

Find a Bible Study

Going to church on Sundays and worshiping with a local body of believers is essential to being a healthy Christian who is learning and growing in grace and in the faith. Church attendance doesn’t save anyone, but it is very often a pretty good barometer of your walk with Christ. Weekly fellowship with your brothers and sisters in Christ helps keep you accountable, it encourages you as well as others in your local church, it challenges you to persevere through trials,  and it’s fun! (Or at least it should be! )

As you can tell, we at Precept Camden firmly believe in serving faithfully in a local body of believers. Another important aspect of spiritual growth is attending a weekly Bible study where you dig deep into the Word of God and discover it’s truths for yourself. Precept Ministries International, known as the “Inductive Bible Study People,” provides some of the highest quality training available to those desiring to lead a Bible study. They will also help you find a Bible study in your area so that you can attend in person or help you find one online that you can attend virtually.
